Is Flaxseed Oil useful for the Homeowner?
By john | October 26, 2007
Flax seed oil is derived from the seeds of the particular plant called Flax. It has been claimed by the oil manufacturers and salesmen that there is the presence of a commercial wood preservative in flax seed oil. The performance of the linseed oil is beyond measures. The only reason why flax seed oil is used as a preservative is because of its price. Compared to any other commercial preservative, flax seed oil is less than half of its price. The two benefits of flax seed oil for which there are no reasonable alternative are:
- Flax seed is used as an additive to the glazing putty. If the base of the oil in your glazing putty is getting a little stiffer then you can add a very small amount of boiled flax seed oil and mix it into the solution thoroughly. It will still help in retaining some lumps no matter how long you mix it.
- When re-glazing you can also dry wood in window. While replacing a window pane you can brush or rub a small amount of boiled linseed oil and mix it thoroughly. Soon after you can apply the glazing putty as it will prevent it from drawing the oil from the putty too quickly.
